Toxicity and pathological effects of orally administered ivermectin in Atlantic, chinook, and coho salmon and steelhead trout

چکیده
Because ivermectin (22,23-Dihydroavermectin B,) has been proposed as an oral treatment against sea lice infections of farmed salmonids, we investigated the toxicity and pathological effects of various doses of ivermectin administered orally every second day to steelhead trout Oncorhynchus mykiss, coho salmon Oncorhynchus kjsutch, chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha and Atlantic salmon Salmo salar under laboratory conditions. These species differed in their ability to tolerate ivermectin, with coho salmon the most tolerant followed by chinook, then Atlantic salmon. Unequivocal results for steelhead trout were not obtained due to a secondary disease outbreak (vibriosis). Histological examination of the major organ systems revealc?d no pathological changes that could be associated with ivermectin toxicity in any of the salmon species tested.

Relative resistance of Pacific salmon to infectious salmon anaemia virus.
Infectious salmon anaemia (ISA) is a major disease of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, caused by an orthomyxovirus (ISAV). Increases in global aquaculture and the international movement of fish made it important to determine if Pacific salmon are at risk. Steelhead trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, and chum, O. keta, Chinook, O. tshawytscha, coho, O. kisutch, and Atlantic salmon were injected intraperit...

Anthropogenic effects on watersheds are important in explaining the decline of Pacific Northwest salmon stocks. Associations were tested between thirteen anthropogenic variables in 202 watersheds in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and California and the stock status of summer, spring and fall Chinook Onchorhynchus tshawytsha, coho O. kisutch, and winter steelhead O. mykiss. Summer Chinook had the hig...
متن کاملDiscrimination of Chinook Salmon, Coho Salmon, and Steelhead Redds and Evaluation of the Use of Redd Data for Estimating Escapement in Several Unregulated Streams in Northern California
—We developed and evaluated a stratified index redd area method to estimate Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, coho salmon O. kisutch, and steelhead O. mykiss escapement in several coastal streams in northern California based on the assumption that redd size is related to the number of redds a female builds. Sources of error in redd counts were identified, including the use of logistic re...

A plasmacytoid leukemia of chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, has recently been recognized in seawater netpens in British Columbia, Canada. The disease has occurred at several sites and has caused high mortality. Plasmacytoid leukemia is characterized by a generalized invasion of visceral tissues and the orbit of the eye by plasmacytoid cells. The disease was experimentally transmitted t...

The aetiological agent of infectious salmon anaemia (ISA) is an orthomyxo-like virus with a negativestranded RNA genome consisting of eight segments (Dannevig, Falk & Namork 1995; Falk, Namork, Rimstad, Mjaaland & Dannevig 1997; Mjaaland, Rimstad, Falk & Dannevig 1997). The ISA virus (ISAV) constitutes the only member of the Isavirus genus (Kawaoka, Cox, Haller, Hongo, Kaverin, Klenk, Lamb, McC...
